2022 TIAF Short Films Competition Lineup Announced

2022 Taichung International Animation Festival (TIAF) will take place from September 23rd to September 28th at Shin Kong Cinemas, Shin Kong Mitsukoshi, Taichung. The organizer Taichung Film Development Foundation announced the 8th TIAF lineup today (August 1). The preliminary juries had selected 61 animated short films, some of them have also been selected for Academy Award and the Annecy Festival. This time, the TIAF Short Films Competition received a record-breaking number of 3,014 submissions from 106 countries and regions. It’s also the greatest number of submissions in Taiwanese animation competitions.

 

Advised by Taichung City Government and Information Bureau, organized by Taichung Film Development Foundation, TIAF has marched into its eighth edition. With the support from the government lead by mayor LU Shiow-Yen, TIAF has become the biggest animation festival in Taiwan. This year, the number of applications exceeded 3,000 for the first time, proving that Taichung has not only become an index city to encourage animation creation, but also let the world knows Taichung's deep cultivation of the animation industry over the years. This year’s TIAF will be grandly held from September 23rd to September 28th in Taichung, and we’re super excited to see you there!

According to the selected 61 animated short films, besides “Bestia” nominated for Academy Award, we also have 11 Taiwanese films been selected, including《Alice on the beach》directed by WU De-Chuen, who changed the painting style of the past, using color contrast to make the film present a strong but harmonious atmosphere;《The Hidden Flow》directed by YANG Tzu-Hsin, the Taiwanese grand prix winner of 2021 TIAF and《The Island of Us》directed by YU Yu.

In addition, many rising stars in Taiwan's animation industry also emerged in this competition, including Director TENG Yu-Hsuan's thriller and fantasy films 《Ant Hotel》; Director TSAI Yi-Chia's playful and childlike work 《FELIX》; Director LING Yu-Ching《Outlaw》, which won the gold prize in the 3D animation group of the TV Awards and many other outstanding students works. The shortlisted works showing the latest trends in animation creation around the world are definitely worth looking forward to!

For the preliminary jury team, we have WANG Chi-Sui, LIAO Wei-Chih, WANG Wei-Xiu, LIN Ching-Hsuan, LIN Huang-Yao, CHEN Yi-Chien, LIN Shih-Yung and YU Tsun-Chun, invited by the curator CHANG Yen-Jung this year.

Taichung Film Development Foundation said that TIAF is to create an animation interactive platform. With the Short Films Competition Nominees, the best international animators continuously participate in TIAF as we can see. Taiwanese animators also bring us a magical and realistic worldview.
