Taichung International Animation Festival Announces the Grand Prize of NT$500,000 Today The Festival Receives Praises and Acclaimation from International Guests

"2016 Taichung International Animation Film Festival" announced the winners of its major awards at the closing ceremony today (Oct 21) at the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts. The Best Taiwan Animation Award of NT$500,000 was awarded to 20 by new generation director CHIANG Chu-Ying; this historical moment was shared by both domestic and international well-known animation industry professionals and representatives from movie and television industry, which marked the perfect ending of the closing ceremony. Later in the evening, the 2nd edition of the animation festival was rounded off impeccably with the screening of The Red Turtle, the animated feature film produced abroad for the first time by Studio Ghibli.

The winners of the major awards were announced at the closing ceremony of the 2nd edition of Taichung International Animation Film Festival, after evaluation and discussions between distinguished jury members including C. Jay Shih, the professor from National Taiwan University of Arts, CHIU Li-Wei, a Taiwanese animation filmmaker, Konstantin Bronzit, a Russian animation master, Ann Marie Fleming, the director of animated feature film Window Horses, and Daniel Šuljić, the curator of the World Festival of Animated Film Animafest Zagreb, Croatia. 20 by director CHIANG Chu-Ying won the Best Taiwan Animation Award of  NT$500,000, AND THEN by director YANG Tzu-Hsin won the Taichung Award of NT$300,000, An Eternal Vacation of Happiness by director CHUNG Cheng-Hsu won the Special Jury Award of NT$100,000, Red by director WU Jo-Hsin won the Best Student Film Award of NT$50,000, and SUPERMARKET by director Doz LIN won the Audience Choice Award; Merit Awards of NT$10,000 went to Crash Testing by director HSUEH Yu-Ting, SOAR by director Alyce TZUE, Subsurface flow by director WU De-Chuen, and SUPERMARKET by director Doz LIN. All these works showcased exuberant creativity of the Taiwanese animation talents, and the competition entries of the coming year is certainly even more worth looking forward to.

This edition of the animation festival, boasting 53 screenings (including 4 free screenings) of total 195 animated films from 25 countries, ran from October 13 (Thursday) to October 21 (Friday). In addition to incorporating more quality selected films from home and abroad, in the future the competition section is expected to be taken to international scale in hopes of facilitating the exchange of top international animation talents. The future goal is to organize film market in order to integrate the animation related resources in Taiwan and to act as the matchmaking medium for animation industry partners from around the globe so as to establish the festival as more than just a platform simply for screening and exports but also a stage aimed for the exchange of international talents.
